A recent report in the Guardian sent out a warning to leaseholders, who might find themselves in breach of their lease. In the worst-case scenario, the landlords (freeholder) can demand that you forfeit your lease – and you lose all the money you have invested in buying your flat. Far more likely is that you are faced with a bill for them to grant consent or a demand that you cease taking in paying guests.
Remember that if you are subletting you do need to be sure that the property is safe and has a gas safety certificate if it has any gas appliances.
